Customer Review: This is a great diet
I checked this book out from the library a while back and decided to give the diet a try since it seemed to me to be a really healthy way to lose weight. The premise is to eat the right things (lean meats, vegetables, fruits, whole grains) in the proper proportions (seems like sound advice to me). Tie this with a good exercise program (which you will have to find elsewhere) and you will lose weight. I agree that the recipes in the book are sometimes involved to prepare and often require kind of expensive ingredients. I’m a bit of a foodie and love to cook so this really isn’t a problem for me and I’ve enjoyed making many of the recipes in this book and in the companion ‘Sonoma Diet Recipes’ book (which I highly recommend). Those people that claim, however, that the diet takes too much work or is inflexible did not read the book very carefully. You are by no means restricted to the recipes outlined in this book. You are given lists of allowable foods (quite extensive) and you can eat anything that is made from those foods so long as they are prepared in a healthy manner. Yes, you will have to prepare some food at home, but we need to be doing that anyway. Let’s face it, there just really aren’t too many healthy options when you eat out and our insistence on convenience food was probably a major factor in our current need to lose weight. That said, I also believe that preparing healthy food at home does not have to be excessively time consuming. Throw some rice in a rice cooker, steam some vegetables (frozen is even faster), put some meat on the grill and you can have a great healthy meal in less time than you will wait for the food to get to your table at the restaurant! Find a cookbook for quick meals (15 min, 30 min, whatever) or search online and find some recipes that use sonoma diet foods. Substitute a few things if you have to (e.g. olive oil instead of butter) and cook away. This doesn’t have to be that complicated! If you are looking for some great easy recipes, I would recommend subscribing to ‘Everyday Food’ magazine. I do and find that a good majority of the recipes are very sonoma friendly, they are easy, and they taste great. Now, as far as my personal experience with this diet goes, I lost about 15 pounds in about 5 weeks (which was my goal). One of the things that I liked best about this diet is that I feel so good while I am doing it. I have more energy, I sleep better, and I actually look forward to eating again! Plus, I reached the point where the thought of consuming a quarter pounder or a bottle of soda actually made me feel ill. My body did not want them anymore because the food I was eating made me feel so much better. So, my advice is to give this a try but remember that it’s not an exact science, it does not have to be complicated and it’s more of a philosophy on eating right than anything.

Customer Review: Fantastic program on creation of health
Dr. Rau has written an excellent, easily understandable book on how to create health and/or recover from illness. His common sense approach, with simply stated yet complete explanations, made it so much easier to follow his program than others I’ve tried. For instance, I never knew that eating onions has the effect of making the lymphatic system sluggish! I have found it easier to adjust my dietary habits because I have information about how the foods I used to eat were affecting my health. I’ve been ill with Lyme disease for a couple of years and felt horrid–extreme fatigue, pain, neurological symptoms, aphasia, etc; following Dr. Rau’s program for just a few weeks has made an enormous difference in how I feel. I have energy, something I haven’t been able to claim for a very long time, and I just feel BETTER. Knowing now that a high percentage of the immune system is in the gut, eating to heal it makes total sense. What a difference! I never thought I’d be eating oatmeal with raw apples and a tablespoon of flax seed oil and enjoy it, but it’s very tasty and gives a wonderful, sustained energy throughout the morning. This is not a bad book, however I think it is written more along physical than emotional lines, i.e. it suggests a high-fibre diet of at least 35 grams a day and a balanced diet focussing on typical fruits, veggies, etc. Some exercise. But nothing along behavioural lines. For me any long-lasting programme has to start with a very deep-rooted motivation where the will to follow a healthy diet outweighs the compulsion to eat. If the book does not address that compulsion to eat, it can only be a tool, not a programme. I am however impressed with the product range she has created and am hoping to try out her shakes. She is obviously doing well financially and I cannot help but feel a little exploited when she gives statistics on the billions that are being raked in on products, services and programmes for people who want to loose weight. Obviously she landed in the right business. I did learn something about fiber in the diet, but in general the book did nothing to motivate me along “wow” lines. For example: the statement that in order to loose weight, you need to use less calories. Think there is more to losing weight than just less calories. At the very basic level it requires a major overhaul of perception and attitude, training of behaviour, fundamental lifestyle changes, and yes diet as a tool. So as a tool the book is not too bad. Once I have got my attitude straightened out with wanting to loose weight more than giving up on compulsive eating, then yes, her programme may have a good place in my life. Am going to invest in the shakes.

I went on the South Beach Diet in November 2005. In one year I went from weighing 280 lbs to weighing 215! My cholesterol went from 221 to 141,and my blood pressure went from 150/100 to 117/77 (with NO drugs). Also I lost 6 inches around my waist. I bought this book after a recommendation by a pet psychic (yes, I’m one of THOSE people :)) and boy, did it make a difference! After realising what most of the pet food on the market is really made of, I’ve been wanting to cook my dogs’ food, but was afraid of not giving them enough nutrients. This book makes it easy - within 8 weeks, in a simple step-by-step program, you will become an expert petfood cook and learn all about the necessary nutrients, supplements, and health benefits. I bought this book primarily for my 10-year old rescue dog, who was having problems with her ears and coat, due to allergies, and “popping” joints. After week 6 on this program, I noticed that her ears were no longer flaky and inflamed, fur had started to grow on a bald spot, dandruff had cleared up and no more sounds were coming from the joints. Also, there’s a new spring in her step and she’s just overall more active and downright frisky. It takes some effort and buying supplements to make this healthy food, but it pays off in the long run - I’ve saved on vet bills and my dog is much happier and healthier.

I bought my Complete Triathlon Book ( Matt fitzgerald) in 2007. I compete in many Duathlons and a few Triathlons.I also run competively 1 or 2 times per week. In general im pretty competitive, like to be near the front, so was looking for lots of new tips etc . I would rate the book as ok. The cover looks great. To get my higher rating I would hope to see many more pictures ‘ preferably in color’ to illustrate various beneficial tri techniques, equipment and ways to save those vital seconds. I’m still looking for the perfect Tri Book. To date I have found my best advice in seperate swim , bike and run books. Gerry K

Customer Review: not enough recipes/not specifc info
While I found this book and easy read and a great diet to follow (my parents want to try it), there are only a couple concerns I have come across. Before I get to those I just want to say the diet is GREAT—I have lost 14 pounds this past month, but here are just the some things that need to be tweaked in the book (maybe in the 2nd edition). First of all—the first phase should be called the vegetarian/no-caffeine phase. I do not eat alot of veggies (hence my weight problem) and work nights, so I am used to consuming at least one can diet soda or cup of coffee a day. BUT, I got through it just fine and learned to make veggies in different ways with the recipes provided. That gets me to the second problem I had. There are only a handful of recipes in this book and many of them seem to be made for people in Beverly Hills. One of the recipes is for Sea Bass, which by the way, is $24/lb right now and usually expensive (what’s wrong with a recipe using Cod or Salmon?). Alot of recipes included uncommon ingredients that I ran to different stores trying to find. Every recipe I tried was pretty tasty and I realize I don’t have to go by the recipes alone, but as I’ve said before, I did not eat very many veggies before, so convenience of different recipes would help. Also–when you are able to eat meat again, you are able to eat 3-4oz of different meats/day—question….is that cooked or uncooked? Some diets say uncooked, but I’ll tell you that the 4oz of scallops/shrimp I cooked went right down to about 1oz, so better wording would be great. Dr. Ian is great, I’ve watched him on Celebrity Fit Club and he has motivated me eat healthier. Great diet, the book just needs some tweaking.

I became aware of the role of nitric oxide when reading You, Staying Young. So I did some research and found this product. My husband and I have gone through two containers only so it is too soon to say but we like taking this product. It tastes good and we enjoy drinking it before we go to bed. “We interviewed A-list stars and their trainers and nutritionists because celebs have no choice but to stay in shape; it’s their job.” ~ Introduction “The Black Book of Hollywood Diet Secrets” is a book filled with not-so-secret tips for weight loss. While it is true that you may have heard it all before (eat your veggies and protein), this book puts the tips in an easy-to-read format that is really fun to read. The tips include the basics of a healthy diet along with ideas for exercising more and more. The book begins with stars either saying they exercise all the time or that they don’t at all. Are you willing to work out six times a week? There are very few stars in this book that say they don’t exercise. Have you heard that artificial sweetners make you fat? If you need more motivation not to use them this book also explains that they dehydrate the skin. One surprise is that chocolate can help you burn fat. I’m sure they mean dark chocolate. It would have been helpful if the authors had promoted “stevia” as a natural sweetener. You may also be surprised to learn about the healthy benefits of parsley and asparagus. In the first French Toast recipe, the instructions tell you to mix egg whites in a bowl but they don’t list how many eggs to use in the ingredient list. I assume they want you to use two eggs. They do remember to put in the egg whites in the second Banana French Toast recipe. Some of the stars interviewed say you should eat only egg whites while later in the book it is OK to eat whole eggs. Which is it? At times there is no consistency because everyone has a different idea on how to lose weight. It seems you have to make a decision based on the facts presented in each case. I just finished my second marathon season, and am ready to take a step up in the laziest manner possible. ha ha! My previous diet was vegetarian, no dairy, but fish and eggs were included because I didn’t feel like I was getting the right fats and protein. What I like about this book is that Brendan gives you the info to dive right into a vegan diet, but he also gives you the basics for someone that wants to slowly ease in, with regards to effort. I have started by adding to my intake every day: a veggie rich salad, a smoothie, and an energy bar. They were pretty simple, and did not involve spending $237 at whole foods (beside, I found a great co-op which is way cheaper). I pick a few things, and then shop only for the ingredient they require. I have tried sprouting quinoa and buckwheat, and the quinoa has become a new favorite in salads and energy bars. I’m also a big fan of BOKU Superfood powder, which has a lot of the ingredients he talks about like Chlorella, Sea Vegetables, and other good stuff. I don’t spend much time cooking during the week, so I prep all my veggies, salad items, and energy bars on Sundays, and then everything is really fast during the week. I’m not much of a dinner person either… I often go out with friends and follow his eating out tips, and or myself eating a bowl of cooked psuedograins for dinner, and that’s enough. After a few weeks, I’m down from 130lbs to about 127, and my body fat has decreased about 2% as well. Weightloss is appealing, but its not really my priority, mind you. Its all easy enough, becomes easier after you try recipes a few times, and you feel very good since you’re getting proper nutrition for once without crazy supplements! This is a lifestyle change and something I feel like I can do on an ongoing basis.

Customer Review: Wonderful, but you must be ready for this book!
I really do love this book. It remains to be seen whether or not it will work for me (losing that last 20 lbs for going on 20 years now!). Or rather, it remains to be seen whether or not I will get down to business and take to heart the really wonderful information in this book! I do think one has to be mentally “ready” for the information Beck presents. I’m not sure how useful the book would have been 5 or 6 years ago before I digested a library’s worth of diet/exercise books. I wasn’t ready for the internal work then. So I have traveled a rather long road which has led me (in desperation??) to “being ready” to absorb the wisdom in this book. After a lot of years and reading a mountain of diet books, all of which supposedly had the magic “recipe” to drop the extra fat, I’ve finally reached the conclusion that the answer has been in my head all along, not in the details of some exceptional, magic diet program thought up by someone else. Those programs haven’t worked primarily because I haven’t been able to stick with any of them and make them work. The question is always, “Why haven’t I stuck with anything long enough to succeed?” This is where Martha Beck’s approach just might be the answer. Boy oh boy did I identify myself in some of her descriptions. She describes her own past weight battle and it mirrors my own, so I’m already relating on that level. I like her analogies of the Dictator-Wild Child-Watcher within us (yep…my Wild Child gets loose and goes on the rampage way too often), and I find myself agreeing with the concept of developing the Watcher as a key to ultimately attaining the right weight. I’m forcing….yes, forcing myself to answer some of the questions she asks. There aren’t really a lot of them, this isn’t a protracted psychological workbook or anything, but after sticking my nose up at a lot of this self examination stuff for years on end, I’m finally starting to think there might be something to making yourself sit down and really think about the things that affect your out of control eating behaviors. One thing I really really like is Beck’s style…..intelligent, knowledgeable, wise, and best of all, humorous. This can’t be all dark and seriousness, and her occasional light and humorous comments hit the funny bone in just the right way. She’s a person you instinctively know you would really like in person. She “speaks” to you in a really approachable way, and you know she’s a friend. Meanwhile, I’ll report back later regarding my success with this approach. I feel very positive at this point, and that’s a good thing!

This is an excellent book, well written and full of insight and common sense, and I think anyone who is interested in losing or maintaining weight should purchase and read this book. I’ve been on about every diet there is, and for quite some time I’ve beem maintaining a 156 lb weight loss (from 271 lbs to 115 lbs. I am 5′0″ tall) As part of my maintenance, Dieting has become one of my Hobbies. I’m always looking for an effective plan to take-off and keep-off weight. I learned about the No S Diet book through Woman’s World Magazine, because I frequently pick-up a copy of it to learn about new diet books. If I find one that looks interesting to me, then I’ll usually buy it and read it. I bought a copy of “The No S Diet” and read it. Then I read it again. Then again. After that I ordered another one through Amazon for them to ship to an out-of-state dieting friend. A week or so later I ordered another for a different friend. Not long after that I ordered another for my sister. I don’t think I’ve ever written a book review here before, although I frequently buy books here. I’ve read literally hundreds of diet books, and worked to follow many of the diets inside them, but I think that if I had just been able to have this one book years ago, and had followed the simple plan it outlines, I could have saved myself many fat years….AND a great deal of money that I’ve spent on other diet books and diet clubs.

I don’t buy diet books, I don’t believe in depriving myself or regimenting my diet and I was able to be a size 00 up until my 28th-29th birthday, give or take. Alas, I moved countries and picked a few bad eating habits along the way, 10 years later I’m flirting my way to a size 12 and I started wondering if the weight gain was ever going to stop. I knew there had to be a way to bake my cake (I’m a cook) and eat it, I just refused to think that if I wanted to be slim again I should forever ration, scrutinize, divide my food and worse: say goodbye to a list of foods and ingredients. Well, I found the way: the NoS Diet. If I tell you that I have been eating this way until I moved countries and started gaining weight and that there is plenty of people that eat this way, you’ll think there’s something wrong either with me or with the book, I mean: isn’t this a diet book?. Yes and no; it is a diet book in the sense that by reading it and following it’s premise, you’ll lose weight and even better, you’ll keep it off; it’s not a diet book because there is no regime here, no menus, no recipes, no restrictions, no magic formula; this is a book that will tell you in a concise and precise way how is that your skinny friend manages to be skinny even though she has never dieted, how come those people in the ’70s were all so skinny, how come ,even, is that you used to be thin once upon a time, like in my case. This is a book about good habits and moderation, how to learn them or re-learn them and more importantly: how to keep remembering those good habits and keep them up for the rest of your life. You want flashy testimonials?, sorry, none here; I can, however, tell you that I have lost three lbs in the month I’ve been following this book’s advice, that I’ve been eating exactly the way I wanted to eat, that all guilt about food has been removed from my conscience, that my confidence has made a comeback, that all my dietary anxiety is gone. You want to know what I’ve had today?: Raisin and walnut home baked bread with butter and honey and hot milk, chickpea and pasta stew with a drizzle of olive oil and parmesan cheese and egg korma, flatbread and mango for desert, all chosen by me, just because this is what I wanted to eat today, not bad, huh? No Sweets No Snacks No Seconds except on Saturdays, Sundays and Special occasions, that’s all there is to it, yes it’s all in the cover, but reading the book is also very helpful, very explainative and you can always go back to it for reference. In short: This is gold. I can do this. YOU can do this. Forever. Do yourself a favor, buy this book and follow it’s advice. I was diagnosed with IC 3 years ago. I joined the IC Association and buy books they suggest and other items. I could not put this book down. It answered alot of my questions. It is not just a cookbook. She has IC and has friends with IC. They experiment with products they hear could help with symptoms of IC and she puts the results in her book. The recipes are great and she discusses each food in detail why IC sufferers may have flare ups from them. She gives alot of websites for information about IC and other illnesses related to IC sufferers. There is alot of reading and if you skip over you may miss something you could use. For example, this is the first I have heard of this but she tells of using alittle baking soda in a glass of water for burning pain. The other night I had a flare up and felt like I was on fire. The burning was so bad. I remembered that she said baking soda worked for her. Even though it tastes yuk, when you are in so much pain you don’t care. I used it and within a few minutes the burning was gone. I used it three times so far and had the same great results. She also has in the back an index for vegetarian recipes, and Low Oxalate recipes. Would recommend to all IC patience. She describes how to test food also to find out what flares IC symptoms. I had been thinking about detoxing for a few months now and found out about the Master Cleanse on a web forum I participate in. This book provides all the steps you need to do the cleanse, some very helpful information from the experience of the author, and then a lot of one sided extra information I could’ve done without. The first 50 pages are really just the author talking about his career,and what foods he believes people shouldn’t eat because of the toxins they leave behind. It’s just my opinion that people who want to Master Cleanse already have an idea of why they need to detox. Although he did credit Steven Burroughs for his original work, I felt the author wrote in such a way (in the beginning)that would lead people to believe he’s had a great deal to do with the development of these fabulous ideas like the Master Cleanse and Color therapy. I’m also a little skeptical of his concrete understanding of medical conditions, particularly his claim that the Lemonade Diet and some other adjuntives completely cured his wife’s cervical cancer. I only purchased the book because I cound’t find the original Master Cleanser by Steven Burroughs. I’m still going to order it. Ultimately, this is a very useful book because it tells you how to get the most out of your cleanse, what to expect, and what to do if you’re not seeing the results you desire. If you’re like me and you really want to find out how to Cleanse, skip the first fifty pages and get to the good nitty gritty.

Customer Review: Everything I was looking for and more
This book was everything I was looking for and more. After reading “Sugar Blues” by William Dufty, I wanted a practical “how to” book to help me cut excess sugar out of my diet. However, I am not an anti-sugar extremist and wanted to find creative ways to get rid of unneccesary excess sugar, while keeping the sweetness and taste in my food, including desserts, and “Get the Sugar Out” definitely provided that. The book suggests varying levels of sugar extraction, from simple sugar substitution to complete elimination, making the book applicable to anyone and everyone wanting to cut some or all of the sugar out of their diets. Ann suggests several alternatives for refined sugar and white flour that are worth exploring. I found sucanat and fructose to be excellent sugar substitutions. Also her glycemic index is handy, though not as exaustive as other books I’ve seen. I’ve tried several of her recipes with success, and have raised the level of nutrition of my own recipes using her tips and substitutions. Overall, I enjoyed her wholesome approach to food, and will continue to refer to her book often when eating out and cooking at home.

I think that this book was very helpful. The background info about the dangers of sugar/sugar substitute consumption and the diseases/conditions related to sugar/sugar substitutes was concise and informative. Personally, I am not going to make use of all 501 suggestions, but with so many ideas, I found a bunch that are going to help me kick the sugar habit (hopefully!). A very nice feature was that among the 501 ideas, there were also a bunch of recipes that look really good, and they’re (for the most part) healthy. I would recommend this book!

When combined with a great deal from Amazon, ability to upload to the health management software, and ability to print for your records… its just a great product. Customer Review: Makes you mindful
I admit I went to sleep listening to the entire thing (they say that is normal). But now that I know which tracks get to the beef, they are very good. They help to make you mindful (the book comes with a CD). The book is a bit boring but what is unique is it’s not food plan and it’s not quackery “you are getting sleepy” hypnosis. I put it on my IPOD and listen before bed. The net/net is that it makes you mindful during the day. It helped me give myself a Girl Scout cookie Samoa intervention (I normally eat pretty good but those Samoas are down right evil I tell you!). It worked. I heard about it from Dr. Mark Hyman’s emails that I get (he is awesome as well) and Dr. Weil also did a plug on these guys. You do have to get past the corny parts “you can do it, yes you can” but it’s worth it. I also like Belleruth Naparstek. Her voice is soothing and she has an entire series. So, if you are struggling or need adjusting, add this to your aresenal and just use it as time to relax. It may surprise you that it has some impact on your thinking (but I do recommend staying awake for tracks 6 & 7 where the real beef is).

Before I was hypothyroid never had to worry about my weight, so becoming hypothyroid was a major rude awakening. Where before I could lose weight by cutting out a few sodas and chips each week, after my thyroid problem started, I not only couldn’t lose weight, I actually gained weight following stringent diets. It was awful. I was so relieved when I finally was able to start losing weight again, by optimizing my thyroid function, changing what I ate, and adding in supplements and appropriate exercise (an approach I’ve outlined in detail in my book, The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss). But that doesn’t mean that I don’t work at this every single day. I always have more to lose it seems, because it’s easy to gain, holidays and wintertime can be setback periods, and I’m by nature not an athletic or active person. So weight loss and management is a lifestyle for me, not just something I can do once and forget about! So, with all this in mind, I have to say that s Steven and Joy Gurgevich’s book/CD, The Self-Hypnosis Diet, is a resource that I consider pretty much indispensable, no matter what type of diet you are following — helping make any diet successful — whether you’re following my Thyroid Diet, or you’re doing Weight Watchers, or Ediets, or low-carbing it, South Beach, or making up your own diet as you go. I’ve been using this book and companion CD for more than a year, and I consider it absolutely essential to my ongoing diet and weight loss efforts. Dr. Gurgevich is a member of the faculty at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine, where he is the Director of the Mind-Body Clinic and teaches mind/body medicine to physicians. Dr. Gurgevich is very much the real deal, and he has created an incredible, effective approach. When it comes to diet and weight loss, I only recommend books or products that I have personally tried and found helpful. I’m a diet product guinea pig for thyroid patients, and believe me, I’ve tried some pretty wacky things along the way. Most of the things I try I never even bother to write about. Why? Because they don’t work, and they’re just trying to rip us off! But this is different. Quite simply, the Self-Hypnosis Diet does work. It helps make the connection between what you WANT to do, and what you DO! Customer Review: Wouldn’t recommend for athletes…But still a great read
Jillian has a great dedication to her work and it shows in this book. You must be willing to commit to it 100%, which she makes very clear. I thought I would fall into this category as fitness and nutrition are high priority in my life. However, after reading the first section on Diet, I realized this wouldn’t work for me. CONS: I am training for my third Half-Marathon, thus running very frequently and relatively long distances. The calorie limits were extremely low for my daily activity needs. And in my non-expert opinion, extremely low for anyone, in general. I have tried calorie-restrictive diets before (lingering on 1200-1400 cals a day) only to see them really mess up my metabolism. On the other hand, this book is stated to be a 30-day regime and not intended for life-long use, so perhaps I should have considered this. Also, be prepared to give up alcohol in this regime! I require a beer as soon as the weekend hits, so this didn’t work for me. PROS: And there are lots of them…As I stated, with my Marathon training, I won’t be following the regime exactly, as is REQUIRED by Jillian. But I still like this book because I find it truly inspirational and encouraging to read Jillian’s words of advice and expert knowledge on fitness. I am definitely going to use her circuit training in my fitness routine - they are great exercises and there are lots of them in this book!! Another Pro - there are pages, upon pages of recipes! I love to cook so I really like this a lot. And lastly, Jillian has lots of knowledge on fitness and how things affect your body, and she explains everything very thoroughly. Overall, I don’t regret buying the book and I enjoy opening it up for a motivational pick-me-up or as a great resource for healthy recipes and strength training.
